Absolute Calibration of PMTs with Laser light
نویسنده
چکیده
We report on the results from calibrating photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) absolutely. Obtaining the quantum efficiency measurements of PMTs to better than 10% is very difficult, but this level of accuracy is necessary to make an absolute measurement of cosmic ray air shower fluorescence yield. As a calibration light source we use photons from a 337.1 nm nitrogen laser passed through an integrating sphere and pinhole collimator. This gives a low enough energy pulse to measure the single photoelectron spectrum for the PMT with same accuracy as the calibrated energy probes.

The Absolute Calibration of the HiRes Detectors
The HiRes experiment studies Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) using the air fluorescence technique. The experiment uses large mirrors that collect the fluorescence light and focus it onto arrays of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The PMTs measure the intensity and time of arrival of the collected light. Our primary system for in situ calibration of the PMTs uses a high stability ( 1%) portab...
متن کاملCalibration and characterization of the IceCube photomultiplier tube
Over 5000 PMTs are being deployed at the South Pole to compose the IceCube neutrino observatory. Many are placed deep in the ice to detect Cherenkov light emitted by the products of high-energy neutrino interactions, and others are frozen into tanks on the surface to detect particles from atmospheric cosmic ray showers. IceCube is using the 10-in. diameter R7081-02 made by Hamamatsu Photonics. ...

Monitoring and intercalibration of the ATLAS TileCal is based on a hydraulically driven gamma source system. Extensive R&D has been carried out and has led to a detailed design for the full ATLAS TileCal. A prototype system has been built and tested on the Barrel and Extended Barrel modules. The realisation of the Cs source system, results concerning its performance, comparisons with other cali...
متن کاملVERITAS Distant Laser Calibration and Atmospheric Monitoring
As a calibrated laser pulse propagates through the atmosphere, the intensity of the Rayleigh scattered light arriving at the VERITAS telescopes can be calculated precisely. This allows for absolute calibration of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT) to be simple and straightforward. In these proceedings, we present the comparison between laser data and simulation to estimate the ligh...
متن کاملUsa-shepherd-n-abs1-og27-oral Absolute Calibration of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes
A calibrated laser pulse propagating through the atmosphere produces a flash of Rayleigh scattered light with an intensity that can be calculated very accurately when atmospheric conditions are good. This is used in a technique developed for the absolute calibration of ultra high energy cosmic ray fluorescence telescopes, and it can also be applied to imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (I...
